FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Metadata Creation and Enrichment Librarian
SUPERVISED BY: Associate Dean, Information Management Services
SUPERVISES: One librarian and two support staff members

POSITION SUMMARY:
Supervises the newly constituted Metadata Creation and Enrichment unit, designed to provide focused access to the Libraries’ collections of unique materials, as well as to the general collections. The unit will contribute significant support to Rare Books and Special Collections Department, provide access to the University’s theses and dissertations, in print and online, and to emerging unique digital collections. Performs original and complex copy cataloging of non-serial formats including digital materials, oversees special projects and vendor contracts, including authority control.

DUTIES:
Supervision and management: Supervise and manage the Unit, which will include 30%
a catalog librarian and two staff members. Plan and manage ongoing and one-time
projects of the unit that include original and copy cataloging of monographic materials
in a variety of formats and languages, analytics, University of Rochester theses and
dissertations, and other materials, as well as transfers and withdrawals of monographic materials, authority work, database corrections, etc. Work closely with Catalog and Metadata Management and Voyager Management Team to devise, implement, and adjust policies and procedures. Oversee special projects and vendor contracts. Train staff as needed.

Cataloging: Perform original and complex copy cataloging of print and non-print 30%
monographic materials in a variety of formats, subjects, and languages.

Catalog digital resources using appropriate non-MARC schemas, such as U of R online 30%
theses and dissertations, as well as other local digital collections as they emerge.
In cooperation with other units within the Libraries, propose and develop policies and procedures for processing such materials.

Professional Service: 10%

 Keep abreast of new developments in the field of cataloging and especially emerging resources and their processing, with the view of implementing them at River Campus Libraries. Participate in professional meetings, groups, etc. as appropriate, both inside and outside the Library. Contribute to the achievement of Division and Library goals by identifying problems and suggesting solutions, proposing new procedures or changes to existing procedures; serve as project manager; advise the Division Head on relevant issues.

 Other duties as assigned.
Required:

* ALA-accredited MLS
* At least three years of original cataloging of monographs and/or non-book materials in a variety of subjects and languages
* Proficiency with AACR2, MARC 21, LCRI, LCSH, LC classification
* Proficiency with OCLC Connexion and an ILS (Endeavor Voyager preferred)
* Supervisory experience
* Awareness of recent trends in bibliographic control, particularly with respect to digital resources
* Ability to set priorities and follow them, work independently, organize time efficiently, perform detailed work accurately, motivate staff
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to maintain good working relations both inside and outside the Unit.


Preferred:

* Experience in cataloging audiovisual materials and musical scores
* Familiarity with one or more metadata schemas other than MARC 21, preferably Dublin Core
* Bibliographic knowledge of one or more of the following languages: German, Italian

Instructional Technology Librarian

Description:Penfield Library of the State University of New York at Oswego seeks an innovative librarian to fill an exciting new position of Instructional Technology Librarian.

Description of Responsibilities: As the Library works to more fully integrate a variety of functions central to the design of a "Learning Commons," this position offers a unique opportunity to promote academic success through the integration of information services, resources and technologies. Working closely with both public service and technology librarians and staff, the instructional technology librarian will provide leadership in the creation of new services and instructional venues, which will be designed to assist students with the use of technology for collaborative learning and the completion of their assignments. This is a 12-month, tenure-track position with faculty status at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian. The position reports to the Learning Commons Coordinator and works closely with the Library's Reference and Instruction work teams, as well as with Access Services staff.

Major roles will include assisting students with web design and the integration of multimedia into their presentations, helping to provide facilities that support group study and creative collaboration, training librarians and library staff to extend the technical assistance they now provide, and consulting with interested faculty regarding new teaching technologies. The position will include providing reference services, including some evening/weekend hours, working as subject liaison with selected disciplines, providing information literacy instruction for classes in liaison areas, academic experiences and interests in culturally diverse groups, and experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives.

Required Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution; teaching background in both one-on-one and classroom settings; experience with online information resources; demonstrated experience with current multimedia production using Windows and Mac systems including skills utilizing/providing instruction in the use of several of the following: Office productivity software, digital audio and video production/editing products, streaming video, course management systems, graphics software, and web authoring tools; excellent communication skills; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students and faculty; experience working with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications: Second degree in instructional technology or related field; Administrative, supervisory or leadership experience.

The Department of Library and Information Studies (DLIS) is seeking two creative and energetic colleagues for tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor levels to begin January or August 2009. Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate achievement of excellence in research, teaching, and service in an interdisciplinary environment. In addition to teaching one or more of our core courses (foundations, reference, management), the successful candidates will be expected to teach in one or more of these areas:

Description of Responsibilities: The librarian in this position is a member of the instruction team, and collaborates in developing, implementing, and assessing new instructional initiatives. Description: The South Central Regional Library Council seeks an energetic and creative full-time person to manage the Digital Services and Resource Sharing programs. • Liaison with the Advisory Committees and User Groups for the above services and serves as liaison to School Library Systems.
• Maintains relationships and communication with Council members through visits, publications, etc. Provides advice and guidance to members as appropriate.

CLIC-on-Health Project Director

Description: The Rochester Regional Library Council is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to head one of the leading consumer health information projects in New York State – CLIC-on-Health – Community and Library Information Collaboration on Health. CLIC-on-Health is an award winning project that provides a website linking consumers to trustworthy health information and to local health care agencies and a training program that trains librarians, health care workers, and targeted groups, such as seniors, in how to find and evaluate quality health care information.

The individual selected for this position will have an opportunity to lead this unique collaboration between medical, public, school, and academic librarians, and the agencies providing health care in the greater Rochester area.

This individual will also have the opportunity to expand the “CLIC-on-Health model” to other regions of New York in partnership with the NY3Rs Councils in the state.

The Rochester Regional Library Council is one of the premier NY3Rs Councils in the state, advancing libraries though collaboration among all types of libraries and with community agencies.

Employment Period:October 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009; Possibility of yearly extensions
Supervision: Reports directly to Executive Director

POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT

Has overall responsibility for the organization, direction, implementation, outreach and evaluation of CLIC-on-Health, the RRLC-administered consumer health website and training Project and directs upstate New York Go Local Project. Works in collaboration with the CLIC-on-Health Steering Committee; statewide Go Local Committee and Project partners in the library and healthcare community.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop, coordinate and carry out all aspects of the RRLC consumer health project, CLIC-on-Health. Includes:

a. Organize and manage the day-to-day activities of CLIC-on-Health, including coordination of updates to agency listings on website;

b. Organize, lead, and report on meetings of the CLIC-on-Health Steering Committee;
c. Work with the website developer and the Steering Committee to continuously improve and enhance the website;
d. Coordinate and/or provide training on the CLIC-on-Health website;
e. Participate in a team that writes grants to secure funding for CLIC-on-Health and for projects related to its mission.

f. Develop and implement a communications plan for COH. Create appropriate materials that spotlight the features/content of CLIC-on-Health.

g. Insure that all grant-funded aspects of the Project are accomplished on schedule.
h. Prepare required reports and evaluate the project.

Total: (35 %)

2. Coordinate activities and processes related to CLIC-on-Health, and upstate NY3Rs councils becoming a National Library of Medicine “Go Local” site.

a. Organize, lead, and report on meetings of the Upstate New York Go Local Steering Committee.
b. Work with the various subcommittees of the Upstate NY Go Local (UNYGoLocal) Steering Committee to ensure aspects of the project move forward.

c. Write grants as needed to secure funding for UNYGoLocal.

3. Seek out, develop and maintain contacts with Project partners in the library and healthcare community to increase the visibility of the Project, solicit their involvement at various levels in CLIC-on-Health, and enhance and expand the content and services of the Project. Represent COH at appropriate health fairs, meetings of health care agencies, and other venues where there is an opportunity to promote the benefits of COH. (20%)

4. Develop and implement a plan for sustainability of the Project. Investigate additional funding sources, which will include identifying, investigating, and implementing contact with potential donors and identifying, investigating and writing grant opportunities. (25%)

5. Perform other duties as required to carry out the mission of COH and RRLC.

REQUIREMENTS:
Significant project management experience. Excellent interpersonal and writing skills. Good understanding of technology.

STRONGLY PREFERRED:
Specific project management experience of 2 years or longer or significant administrative experience. Successful grant writing experience.

MLS from ALA-accredited library education program and 2 years of experience working in a library.

Description: Reporting to the Director of the Library, and working in a team environment, the Reference/Instruction Librarian provides research and instruction services within the library; and works collaboratively with other academic support services staff across the campus to develop programs and initiatives for the college community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide basic and advanced library research instruction to students, faculty and using a full spectrum of resources; and create instructional and training materials in print, multimedia and interactive formats. Collaboratively develop programs to provide instruction in the use of resources and instructional technologies to students, faculty and staff. Full participation in reference services, including scheduled nights, weekends. Take an active, collaborative role in implementing new technology and resources in public services areas. Contribute to collection development by selecting materials in subject areas as assigned and by recommending purchases to further strengthen our collection, including electronic resources.

M.L.S. from A.L.A. accredited library school, or equivalent. Pre-professional or professional experience preferred. Ability to deal effectively with students and faculty in an automated, small liberal arts college library.

The New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education are seeking an experienced and innovative individual to serve as Assistant Commissioner for Libraries and State Librarian. The incumbent will lead the operations of the New York State Library, a component of the Office of Cultural Education (www.oce.nysed.gov) within the New York State Education Department (www.nysed.gov). The successful candidate will have proven leadership qualities; demonstrate vision and the capacity to execute policy for library services in a rapidly changing information management, electronic and digital environment; be able to operate within a complex and dynamic atmosphere and work collaboratively with diverse, often divergent, interest groups.

The NYS Library provides information and library services through its Research Library and the Division of Library Development. Supervising the Director of the Research Library and the Director of the Division of Library Development, the State Librarian will have oversight responsibility for a $13.4 million operating budget, 180 employees, over 20 million collections items and nearly $100 million in State and federal aid to libraries. The incumbent will recommend legislation for the Board of Regents to present to the State Legislature, regulations to govern the operation of State-aided library programs and policies to move library services to higher levels.

One of the largest research libraries in North America, the NYS Research Library is the only state library which is a member of the Association of Research Libraries. The Library’s holdings include a significant manuscript and rare book collection, as well as holdings in a wide variety of formats, including paper, microform, digital and electronic records. It is also a Federal Depository and Patent Library; has the responsibility for the acquisition, distribution and maintenance of New York State documents; and is a regional library for the blind and visually impaired in New York’s 55 upstate counties.

The Division of Library Development provides leadership and technical assistance to New York’s 73 library systems through a comprehensive program of State aid for public, school, academic and special library services. Staff experts work with librarians, trustees, school administrators, public officials and local leaders to solve problems and find new ways of making library services and resources available to their community. Library Development administers more than $100 million in State and federal aid to New York’s libraries and helps them to take full advantage of federal and private funding programs like E-rate telecommunications discounts and Gates Library Foundation grants.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a Master’s in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school and at least 10 years of post-degree professional experience such as a director of a major library system; director of a comprehensive university or research library; or in a management position in a state library agency or large public library. Candidates must have been active nationally, have and be able to communicate a vision for library services for the future and have a collaborative leadership style.

Description:The Macaulay Library (ML) is the world's largest natural sound & video archive including birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. The collection dating back to 1930, includes more than 170,000 individual audio recordings, and grows by roughly 4,000 recordings per year. The legacy recordings are heavily weighted towards analog based materials i.e. reel-reel & cassette, but also includes acetate, 78 rpm, and vinyl LP disks. More recent formats include borne-digital materials including, but not limited to R-DAT, MiniDisc, CD/DVD-ROM, CD-Audio and Compact Flash. In 1999 the ML began digitizing its analog-based recordings and to date roughly 85,000 cuts have been digitized. Responsible for software/hardware upgrades of DAW and Fibre-Channel network and SAN system and equipment installation. Calibrate and repair state-of-the-art digital and analog audio equipment & related systems used throughout the ML audio archival facility and in the field. Maintain world-renowned quality standards for the entire ML audio archival process. Undertake annual equipment inventory for capital assets records. Assist with risk management database to insure adequate insurance coverage on all equipment. Fabricate custom cable assemblies and other specialized devices to support studio and field recording initiatives. Perform QC/QA testing and evaluation of archival, mastering, and authoring media. Provide technical assistance, training, and line supervision to second shift archival team.

This position involves working the evening shift.

Requirements: Associate's or technical/vocational school degree in Recording Technology/Electrical Engineering, with 3-5 years experience or equivalent. Must be extremely well versed in analog magnetic tape recording principals, technologies and operation. Ability to diagnose, repair & calibrate sophisticated analog and digital audio systems down to component level. Proven listening skills. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy to a wide range of internal and external constituents. Communicate ideas clearly and concisely in writing. Strong analytical, numerical and reasoning abilities. Must be familiar with Digital Audio Editing software and hardware including Sonic Solutions/Sound Blade and Pro Tools. Experience managing Fibre-Channel SAN network. Sophisticated test equipment use including Audio Precision System One, Clover Systems CD analyzer, Audio Dev CATS-SA300 DVD analyzer. The Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library, located on the Spencer Hill Campus, is seeking a proactive, creative, technology-oriented librarian whose primary responsibilities include supporting remote learners, overseeing cataloging and serials and serving as a member of the Reference/Instruction/Collection Development team.

The Library staff is currently comprised of the Associate Dean of Learning Resources, two full time professional librarians (this position will increase the number to three), four support staff, and one part-time staff assistant. The Library also encompasses the Media Services and Instructional Technologies departments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Lead the development of library services to support remote learners:
-Identify, evaluate, and promote the use of current and emerging technologies in the library’s reference and instructional services. Technologies might include: online chat, instant messaging, podcasting, RSS feeds, course management systems like WebCT, social networking programs, wikis, blogs, online tutorials, etc.
-Coordinate the provision of library services for off-campus and web-based courses.
-Develop online information literacy tutorials.
-Explore, develop, and promote opportunities to integrate library resources and services into course management and online and remote learning initiatives.
-Develop and implement assessment programs to measure the effectiveness of library services to off- and on-site users.
-Oversee cataloging and serials functions, consulting with staff relevant to their responsibilities.
-Share reference and library instruction duties with other librarians. Supervise the Library one evening a week (current hours extend to 6 p.m.). Participate in the collection development process, assigned to subject areas and as a faculty liaison.
-Serve as the College resource for copyright.
-Participate in College-wide committee work and other areas as time permits.
-Advise the Associate Dean of Learning Resources and keep the Library staff informed of significant developments within the areas of responsibility.
-Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program. Must have reliable transportation to drive to off-campus sites and to attend professional conferences. Generally tech-savvy. Willingness and interest in exploring new technologies. Excellent oral/written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills. Energetic, service-oriented, flexible, and able to work independently. Ability to collaborate with and motivate staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Understanding of rural community college students and environment. Some academic library experience. Some experience with reference and library instruction. Knowledge of online resources and communication tools, including course management software such as WebCT., including proficiency with current standard technologies such as instant messaging, blogs, etc. Ability to produce Web-based information/help pages.
