Compensation and benefits: Salary is negotiable and competitive. Excellent fringe benefits equal to 37% of base salary. Summer teaching is available with additional compensation.
Description: The Department of Library and Information Studies (DLIS) is seeking a new colleague who is committed to excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching, and who wishes to play an active role in shaping the future direction of the department and MLS program within our new academic home, the Graduate School of Education.The full time tenure track faculty position described below is expected to begin August 2008.
The position requires directing the School Library Media (SLM) program, advising students, course scheduling, and participating in regional, state, and national SLMS organizations. International participation in SLM organizations is strongly encouraged. Duties require teaching two courses each semester including SLM courses and youth services courses.
The Buffalo SLM program is supported by a full time program assistant with extensive SLMS experience in NY State, who conducts initial advisement, oversees certification requirements,
and supervises field experiences and student teachers. The candidate is expected to conduct research, publish, participate in efforts to receive external funding, establish and maintain cross-disciplinary connections, and participate in appropriate departmental, school, university and community service activities. Appointment can be at the Assistant, Associate or higher rank, depending on qualifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Library and Information Studies or a related field. The preferred candidate will also hold an MLS. Appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank requires a record of research and publication and evidence of teaching excellence. Experience as a School Library Media Specialist, K-12 teaching, and knowledge of requirements for SLM certification are definite advantages. The candidate should possess the ability to work closely with local school districts and knowledge of SLM educational and technological trends and be able to teach their applications, particularly Second Life, social networking, and Library 2.0.
The Department of Library and Information Studies is one of four departments within the Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the University at Buffalo.
