COLLECTIONS CONSERVATOR/INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT ASSOCIATE, University at Albany (SUNY) Libraries

Position: COLLECTIONS CONSERVATOR/INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT ASSOCIATE
University at Albany (SUNY) Libraries

Description: The University at Albany seeks a full time Collections Conservator to repair, rehouse, and reformat materials for the University Libraries.
= These functions include both simple and complex book and paper repair/ conservation, construction of protective enclosures, and pamphlet binding.
= Duties also include emergency response activities, and student training/supervision.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
= Performs simple and basic conservation repairs, enclosure construction, and preservation photocopying/scanning for the University Libraries’ general circulating collection.
= Utilizes technical skills and judgment to carry out appropriate repairs on artifactually valued materials.
= Assists with exhibition installations.
= Fabricates protective enclosures for books, pamphlets, compact disks, fold out maps, works of art on paper, photographs, etc.
= Collaborates with Preservation Librarian on the treatment of materials from the Special Collection & Archives.
= As the Department’s student staff supervisor, monitors work performed and workflow patterns, and ensures quality of completed work.
= Assists with maintenance of Lab furnishings, space, and equipment.
= Reports to the Preservation Librarian.
= The Collections Conservator keeps abreast of current and new developments in conservation principles, treatment, and procedures, and actively participates in the Libraries and University community.

Qualifications:
Required -
= Baccalaureate degree.
= Relevant experience and training.
= Familiarity with basic conservation philosophy and ethics.
= Demonstrated ability and experience with book repair (rebacking, board reattachment, resewing, recasing, pamphlet binding, etc.), flat paper repair (dry cleaning, humidification and pressing, washing, mending), and enclosure construction (phase boxes, portfolios, encapsulation, matting and framing).
= Working knowledge of Windows applications.
= Strong service orientation.
= Ability and willingness to work according to departmental specifications, guidelines, and procedures.
= Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
= Applicants must address in their applications their abilities to work with a culturally diverse population.

Preferred: Two years experience with technical processing in a large library environment, supervisory experience, reformatting experience (photocopying, microfilming, scanning), and experience teaching or conducting workshops.
