Web Developer/Designer

Position: Web Developer/Designer
University at Albany, State University of New York

Compensation and benefits: Not specified

Description: Full time (40 hours per week)

REPORTS TO: Head, Library Systems, University Libraries

RESPONSIBILITIES: The University at Albany Libraries seek a service-oriented, creative, collaborative, and energetic individual to provide vision and leadership in designing, developing and supporting the Libraries' virtual presence. The person has daily responsibility for organizing, maintaining, updating and improving the Libraries' public Web and Intranet sites, including library's online catalog and link resolver pages; integrating a variety of disparate Web services and resources seamlessly; creating documentation and providing training; works closely with individuals and groups who contribute to the site; may also work on administrative and/or database applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree (awarded by May 2008);
* The degree must be from a college or university accredited by a U. S. Department of
* Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.);
* Knowledge of current and emerging technologies in digital and Web-based services;
* Demonstrated knowledge of effective web interface design, information architecture, human/computer interface (HCI) theory and accessibility;
* Experience with the Microsoft Internet Information Services server and/or Apache server environment;
* Demonstrated proficiency in creating a dynamic, data-driven web site using a relational database and SQL Server;
* Hands-on Web site design experience with HTML, XHTML, JavaScript, and CSS;
* Working knowledge of at least one of the following scripting languages: CGI/Perl, PHP, Ruby, Python, or VBScript;
* Web application development experience using ASP, ColdFusion, PHP, SQL queries, or other tools;
* Proficiency in graphics and images design tools, such as Photoshop, Flash, and web authoring tools, such as Dreamweaver;
* Library work experience;
* Strong oral/written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of clients and staff of all levels of computer knowledge;
* Ability to prioritize tasks; to work both independently and as part of a diverse team;
* Capable of building consensus and communicating effectively with librarians and staff members to collaboratively design and offer innovative, integrated digital library services to our patrons.

Preferred qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field;
* Master's degree in Library Science;
* knowledge of XML, XHTML, XLST, and metadata standards;
* Knowledge and / or experience with the following digital library technologies: OpenURL (Z39.88), Z39.50, SRU/W, metasearch, COinS, and unAPI;
* Experience in producing rich media websites using Flash, streaming media, online audio, and podcasting;
* Experience in physical and logical database design and Database management systems;
* Hand-on experience with a content management system based Web site;
* Knowledge of integrated library systems (e.g. ALEPH) and experience in managing a library online public catalog;
* Evidence-based assessment experience and statistical skills in Web log analysis;
* Familiarity with Web 2.0 technologies, including social networking and AJAX development;
* Experience in conducting focus group studies, usability testing studies and other user interface design testing;
* Library and/or teaching experience.
