Assistant Audio Engineer, Macaulay Library

Position: Assistant Audio Engineer
Macaulay Library , Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Compensation and benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience. One-year term appointment with possibility of renewal based upon availability of funding.

Description:The Macaulay Library (ML) is the world's largest natural sound & video archive including birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. The collection dating back to 1930, includes more than 170,000 individual audio recordings, and grows by roughly 4,000 recordings per year. The legacy recordings are heavily weighted towards analog based materials i.e. reel-reel & cassette, but also includes acetate, 78 rpm, and vinyl LP disks. More recent formats include borne-digital materials including, but not limited to R-DAT, MiniDisc, CD/DVD-ROM, CD-Audio and Compact Flash. In 1999 the ML began digitizing its analog-based recordings and to date roughly 85,000 cuts have been digitized. Responsible for software/hardware upgrades of DAW and Fibre-Channel network and SAN system and equipment installation. Calibrate and repair state-of-the-art digital and analog audio equipment & related systems used throughout the ML audio archival facility and in the field. Maintain world-renowned quality standards for the entire ML audio archival process. Undertake annual equipment inventory for capital assets records. Assist with risk management database to insure adequate insurance coverage on all equipment. Fabricate custom cable assemblies and other specialized devices to support studio and field recording initiatives. Perform QC/QA testing and evaluation of archival, mastering, and authoring media. Provide technical assistance, training, and line supervision to second shift archival team.

This position involves working the evening shift.

Requirements: Associate's or technical/vocational school degree in Recording Technology/Electrical Engineering, with 3-5 years experience or equivalent. Must be extremely well versed in analog magnetic tape recording principals, technologies and operation. Ability to diagnose, repair & calibrate sophisticated analog and digital audio systems down to component level. Proven listening skills. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy to a wide range of internal and external constituents. Communicate ideas clearly and concisely in writing. Strong analytical, numerical and reasoning abilities. Must be familiar with Digital Audio Editing software and hardware including Sonic Solutions/Sound Blade and Pro Tools. Experience managing Fibre-Channel SAN network. Sophisticated test equipment use including Audio Precision System One, Clover Systems CD analyzer, Audio Dev CATS-SA300 DVD analyzer. Comfortable using Studio Suite equipment and studio management software or equivalent. Exercises appropriate confidentiality in all aspects of work. Willingness to work evening shift as required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Electro-mechanical skills desired.
