Compensation and benefits: Commensurate with rank and experience of Senior Assistant Librarian.
Description: Penfield Library at the State University of New York at Oswego seeks an innovative librarian for the position of Instruction and Special Programming Librarian. This is a full-time, tenure track position with faculty status at the Senior Assistant rank.
Anticipated Date of Appointment: December 2008
Description of Responsibilities: The librarian in this position is a member of the instruction team, and collaborates in developing, implementing, and assessing new instructional initiatives. As a member of the team, the incumbent will play a leading role in the creation of interactive, graphically based instructional materials and in the development of other online learning projects. This position is responsible for organizing and coordinating the library's participation in special programming activities, including new student orientation, college open houses, visiting high school classes, and special summer youth programs. This librarian shares reference duties with other librarians, including some evening and weekend hours, and provides collection development, instruction, and general liaison services for assigned departments. The librarian will participate in scholarly work, university service, and professional development.
Required Qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited institution; at least one year of classroom teaching or library instruction experience; background in instructional design and/or assessment; strong public service orientation; strong web, graphic and video editing/screen casting skills; working knowledge of a wide variety of electronic reference and journal databases; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently; experience working with diverse students and faculty in a multicultural environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrable skills in multi-media software and programming such as PHP, action script, XML, Java, Ajax; Camtasia, Flash, database management using SQL & creation of web forms; experience working with course management systems and software; professional librarian work experience at an academic library; demonstrated leadership in managing projects.
Description of Department: Penfield Library is committed to a program of innovative, learning-centered service to students, faculty and staff at SUNY Oswego. Located in the heart of campus and at http://www.oswego.edu/library, the Library is a high tech learning center supporting the campus curriculum, teaching, and research. The Library houses a print collection of over 470,000 monographs, two million pieces of microform, and partial U.S. and New York State government documents depositories. The Library subscribes to over 40,000 print and/or electronic journals, magazines and newspapers. A staff of 16 faculty and professionals and 18 classified staff provide service 95 hours per week. Penfield's well-established liaison program provides support (including collection development, specialized reference, library instruction and regular communication) to faculty in all curricular areas. Penfield Library strongly supports the professional development of its faculty and staff. Mentoring opportunities are available within the Library, throughout the University, and via the Office of the Associate Provost for Multicultural Opportunities and Programs.
